| One of the
engine houses at Wheal Peevor near Redruth the
site is a rare surviving example of what at one time must
have been commonplace three engine houses in close
proximity one each for pumping, winding and the
stamps. Wheal Peevor was active in the 18th century and may even have had one of the early Newcomen steam engines. Later a rich vein of tin ore was struck at the 40 fathom level. After lying dormant for some years, the mine was reopened in 1875 and operated successfully for a number of years |
