Wheal Peevor

   
One of the engine houses at Wheal Peevor near Redruth – the site is a rare surviving example of what at one time must have been commonplace – three engine houses in close proximity – one each for pumping, winding and the stamps.
Wheal Peevor was active in the 18th century and may even have had one of the early Newcomen steam engines. Later a rich vein of tin ore was struck at the 40 fathom level. After lying dormant for some years, the mine was reopened in 1875 and operated successfully for a number of years
