Carn Euny
A few miles east of St Just is the Carn Euny Iron Age settlement. It was first discovered in the 19th century by miners looking for tin. The settlement has been severely damaged by cultivation and stone clearance. Excavations have revealed ten houses including three enclosures of the courtyard house type. The most important feature though is the fogou- an underground passage constructed by lining a trench with dry-stone walling and roofing it with stone slabs which were probably then covered with earth. The purpose of fogous is not known but they may have had religious functions or more simply were just used for storage. The Carn Euny fogou connects to a round chamber. For a photo of the fogou see the next picture.
