Hayle Harbour

Although the harbour is now badly in need of redevelopment, Hayle was, from the mid 18th century a very important industrial town and port serving the mining hinterland. In the early 18 hundreds it was the home of two of the three largest foundries in the world at that time - Harvey's and Copperhouse. Harvey's were responsible for some of the largest steam engines ever built and it was from Hayle that engines were exported around the world. Famous engineers like Richard Trevethick and Arthur Woolf were often to be found in Hayle.
It was from Hayle in 1849 that Matthew Goninan, his wife, Belinda, and their children, Matthew Henry and John Gartrell, left for America. They settled in Wisconsin and their descendants live there still.

Alongside the harbour is a memorial to Rick Rescorla

Rick Rescorla came from Hayle. He lost his life saving others following the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre in New York. The memorial reads:-
