Gwennap Pit
Gwennap Pit
probably started out as a depression caused by mining subsidence
but became famous as a place where the Methodist, John Wesley,
preached on many occasions. He first mentions it in his diary on
the 5th Sept 1752 -
The wind was high at 5 (pm) that I could not stand at the usual
place at Gwennap. But at a small distance was a hollow capable of
containing many thousand people beneath and on all sides
Later in 1806 the irregular pit was remodelled and turf seating
added to produce what we see today
